| Hurricane Irene arriving on the East Coast: hundreds of connections by plane at risk |
New York, USA - The governor of the Big Apple declares the state of emergency (WAPA) - The East Coast of USA is preparing for Hurricane Irene, which
should arrive from the Caribbean to North Carolina on Saturday, later
moving northward, causing rainfalls in the Washington area. The 3-level
storm, according to the National Hurrican Center, could reach level 5
before losing its power.
In New York City -where the hurricane could arrive starting from Saturday- the Governor Andrew Cuomo has already declared the state of emergency, which according to him will consent to rescue the affected areas faster and more effectively. The Big Apple's mayor Michael Bloomberg has ordered the evacuation of hospitals and nursing homes located in the risk areas by 20:00 local time today, contemporaneously asking residents in the coastal areas such as Battery Park City, Coney Island and Rockaways to move to less dangerous areas and not to wait the evacuation order so to make easier the work of the rescue teams. Highly at risk the transport system in the city, with possible disruptions for its 8.4 million inhabitants. Last night MTA, Metropolitan Transportation Authority, announced the launch of the hurricane plan providing for the suppression of transport services by bus, metro and train as soon as the storm passes the speed of 62 km/h. At risk also hundreds of flights scheduled during the weekend; some routes have already been cancelled or changed. The airlines offer passengers the opportunity to rebook their flights to the East Coast for free. (Avionews) |
